Cockwells Modern & Classic Boatbuilding has marked its 25th year in business with an anniversary rally, which took place between Friday 23rd and Sunday 25th July.

The rally welcomed pre-registered owners of Cockwells’ vessels to join its anniversary fleet and sail from Falmouth to Dartmouth and Yarmouth.

Following Cockwells’ acquisition of Hardy Marine’s assets in 2020, the occasion also marked the 40th anniversary of the Hardy Owners’ Club. The fleet was enhanced by a wide range of Hardy motor boats from its earliest hulls to the latest Hardy Hybrid 42 – the first to be completed by Cockwells and launched in Cornish waters.

The rally commenced with a reception at Flushing Sailing Club’s new headquarters with champagne and a hog roast sponsored by Barrus UK and Yanmar Marine UK during the Friday evening. Guests were transported across the water from Falmouth Haven in luxury, courtesy of Cockwells’ glamorous launch, Grace, with her rich mahogany decks and superyacht style.

Flushing Sailing Club was a particularly fitting venue to mark the start of the rally as Cockwells donated the wooden staircase and bar top for its striking new clubhouse. This provided an opportunity for attendees to view the exemplary craftsmanship for which Cockwells is renowned, first hand.

A drinks reception with canapes at Dartmouth Yacht Club followed on the Saturday evening and the rally concluded with a reception at The Terrace restaurant in Yarmouth, sponsored by Raymarine.

“The anniversary fleet of 28 vessels including Duchy Motor Launches; the pilot cutter, Polly Agatha; all manner of Hardys, from the Hardy 20 motor sailor to the latest Hardy 65, created quite a sight to see and we experienced favourable weather conditions as well as warm greetings at each of our destinations,” explained the Company’s Founder and Managing Director, Dave Cockwell.

“As a family-owned British company, we were proud to welcome old friends and Hardy owners to the Cockwells family as we strengthen our commitment to the development of the Hardy brand,” added Dave. “I would like to thank everyone who participated in our anniversary rally and made it happen – from those who cruised the coastline with us and the harbour staff at Falmouth Haven, Dartmouth and Yarmouth who accommodated us on their pontoons, to the hospitality teams at our three venues, our generous sponsors and the Cockwells’ colleagues who worked so hard behind the scenes. With our strong forward order book and continual programme of investment, we eagerly anticipate what the future holds in the next 25 years and beyond.”

Following Cockwells Modern & Classic Boatbuilding’s acquisition of Hardy Marine’s assets last year, the award-winning company marks its 25th anniversary in business with another history-defining moment: the launch of its first Hardy 42 in Cornish waters.

Described by Motor Boat & Yachting magazine as ‘the serious cruiser’s choice’, and arguably the class leader of her size and type, the Hardy 42 is an exceptional vessel with outstanding sea-keeping capability at more than 25 knots. Blending elegant looks with luxurious accommodation and wide, safe, walk-around decks with a generously-proportioned aft deck and flybridge, she provides plenty of outdoor living space.

The 31st Hardy 42, which is the first to be completed by Cockwells, is also the first of the renowned Hardy brand of all-weather motor yachts, designed by Andrew Wolstenholme, to incorporate hybrid propulsion and a digital switching system for full control and monitoring of all the vessel’s systems via the 16” Raymarine displays in the wheelhouse and flybridge helm positions.

Cockwells will continue to build the Hardy 42 to its well-respected traditional design but the Company has also designed two entirely new models – the Hardy 45 and Hardy 53 – to deliver the ultimate modern cruising experience for multi-generational maritime adventures, for which it will launch detailed specifications at this year’s Southampton International Boat Show.

“Cockwells’ Hardys provide an incredibly sturdy, safe, spacious and stylish home from home that are perfect for coastal cruising anywhere in the world, and we are immensely proud to build them,” explains Managing Director and Founder, Dave Cockwell. “Whether you plan to navigate great seaways, island-hop in the Caribbean, stay close to the coast of the British Isles; fancy a Baltic crossing, cruising inland waterways, or sailing the Mediterranean, across to Malta and out into the Aegean Sea, the possibilities are endless.”

Based on the classic Hardy 42 hull, the all-new Hardy 45 is not only designed to deliver outstanding performance across the spectrum of marine environments. The vessel is ergonomically designed to provide personal space for all aboard. There are two en-suite state rooms: one VIP guest suite forward, with scissor-action V-berths that convert into a double with ease, and a luxury cabin aft that allows privacy for time out – an air-conditioned sanctuary to cool down in, away from the heat of the midday sun or a centrally-heated cocoon to cosy-up in when cruising in colder climates.

New side window profiles soften the exterior and a flush-closing side-deck, with doors port and starboard, provides easy access to the helm and spacious saloon, which exudes contemporary style. The layout of the flybridge seating has been modified to maximise space and enhance comfort. A radar arch replaces the radar mast of the original design to accommodate a clear sliding door between the aft companionway and aft deck where you can dine beneath the stars.

Based on the tried-and-tested Hardy 50 hull, the new Hardy 53 reflects the look and feel of the Hardy 45 but offers three luxury cabins as standard; and a larger swim platform to accommodate the boat’s RIB or tender, providing more space for entertaining on the aft deck.

“As with our popular range of Duchy Motor Launches, you can have any layout you choose,” adds Dave Cockwell. “Whether you opt for a galley in the saloon, and a larger VIP guest cabin forward with separate heads and shower cubicle in your Hardy 45; wish to convert the third cabin of your Hardy 53 into storage space for your paddleboards, bikes and other toys, or create a fourth cabin by incorporating the galley within the saloon, we can create a Hardy that is uniquely yours.”

Cockwells is also committed to building the Hardy 40DS and 52DS models to their original designs, and has already completed its first Hardy 52DS hull. This striking explorer yacht, developed from the Hardy 50, which is ideal for exploring in all weathers, offers double-berthed en-suite owner’s accommodation; two twin-berthed cabins with shared heads/shower, and a generously-proportioned deck saloon and cockpit area with plenty of space for dining. There is also the option of a spacious flybridge for relaxing and enjoying the view.

“For anyone excited to own this boat for sea-faring adventures next year, our first Cockwells’ Hardy 52DS is ready for her interior fit-out. Why not design her to your precise requirements at an advantageous price?” adds Dave.

Cockwells Modern & Classic Boatbuilding has acquired Hardy Marine in a deal that will result in the further expansion of this award-winning Cornish company that celebrates its 25th anniversary in 2021.

With a heritage spanning four decades, Hardy Marine has earned its reputation for building sturdy, high quality, all-weather motor boats that combine excellent engineering with impressive seakeeping and elegant interiors from its Norfolk base.

From its purpose-built, low environmental-impact HQ at Mylor Creek near Falmouth in Cornwall, Cockwells enjoys a reputation for building beautiful bespoke boats – from ultra-luxurious superyacht tenders and stylish motor launches to traditional sailing yachts.

Cockwells is also the proud originator of Duchy Motor Launches – a prestigious, semi-production brand that echoes the classical designs of the gentleman’s launch of generations past. These stylish vessels, that range from 21ft to 60ft, can be customised with a seemingly limitless number of optional extras to create a cruising environment that is the pinnacle of modern luxury.

Additionally, Cockwells’ Mylor Creek Boatyard is fully equipped to offer refits, restorations and engineering services for local yachts and superyacht tenders from all over the world.

Delivering a range of boats that meet a variety of requirements, the Hardy name has become synonymous with quality, comfort, strength and experience. This, together with superlative after-sales support, has translated into a loyal customer base, repeat business and robust brokerage values.

In parallel with Cockwells’ Duchy Motor Launches, the hulls of the Hardy 26 up to the Hardy 65 are semi-displacement designs from the drawing board of Andrew Wolstenholme, who is, arguably, the UK’s leading naval architect in this category.

“Both Cockwells and Hardy are committed to building exceptional motor boats that deliver style, reliability, customisation and all the advantages that technological advances can supply,” explains Founder and Managing Director, Dave Cockwell.

“The Duchy is predominantly a stylish day boat and occasional weekender. The Hardy is the Duchy’s rugged, sea-faring cousin. Cockwells are often asked to build bigger boats for cruising; The Hardy is ideally suited to that market.

“We plan to build on the seakeeping and styling of the Hardy brand, and introduce Duchy-like finesse to some of the fittings such as Cockwells’ famous joinery and cutting-edge superyacht technology – to make the Hardy even more yacht,” Dave adds.

By 2021, Cockwells will have built 32 Duchy Motor Launches since the company launched the Duchy 27 in 2011, and demand continues to outstrip supply. Cockwells plans to chart the same course with the Hardy 32 to 65 range and increase demand for these exemplary trawler yachts.

The Duchy 35 and the Hardy 65 are past winners of Motor Boat & Yachting Awards, and both brands attract customers who seek high levels of customisation and craftsmanship.

Cockwells’ purchase of Hardy Marine will also create jobs. The company already operates from two sites – one in Falmouth as well as the Mylor Creek Boatyard – and has increased its headcount from 30 t0 80 staff in recent years. Cockwells has appointed Julian Weatherill from Hardy Marine to the position of Sales Manager in order to sustain the continuity of the brand.

“The many synergies between Cockwells and Hardy make this a perfect match for me,” explains Julian. “Having worked with Hardy clients and owners for the last few years, I am passionate about the brand and know that this new alliance will propel it forward. I am equally delighted to be working with the Cockwells team to drive the sales trajectory of its highly-prized Duchy Motor Launches.”

“Whilst many other companies are laying off staff as a result of the Coronavirus pandemic, Cockwells is proud to be employing more people,” comments Dave. “We have our own in-house design department as well as our own engineering capability and electronic programming. We make our own joinery; we manufacture our own components and sub-contract almost nothing. On the rare occasions that we do sub-contract, we partner with local businesses. We have a dedicated after-sales team, which is very important, and we are undergoing a transition to lean manufacturing to increase productivity and enhance our working environment. With an already successful growth strategy, an international reputation for excellence, a healthy forward order book and our acquisition of the renowned Hardy brand, we are in a very strong position to face the future with confidence.”

Cockwells’ purchase of Hardy Marine has been made possible as a result of funding from Business Investment for Growth (BIG). Financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and delivered by the Cornwall Development Company, this £3.15m investment fund aims to create 175 skilled jobs in Cornwall.

Everyone here at the Hardy yard is saddened to learn of the passing of Colin Mudie RDI CEng FRINA FCSD – designer of the early Hardy range when the company was founded in 1976. Initially small motor-sailers but soon followed by the ever-popular models such as the Family Pilot 20, Fishing 20, 24 & 27 with their distinctive rope fendering on a wide blue hull stripe. Close to 4,000 boats of his design were launched during his era with Hardy.

In his 93 years he become known by many within the industry, from his small mass-produced designs through to large tall-ships such as the 23m training brig ‘Royalist’ and the 43m Sail Training Ship ‘Lord Nelson’. He was also a life Vice President of the RNLI in recognition of his active involvement at local level in Lymington where he lived, along with being an ambassador for the Jubilee Sailing Trust which allows many thousands of people, including those physically disabled, to enjoy the experience of sailing on a tall ship.

A huge loss to the industry, our thoughts are with his family and his many friends.
